of the flight of turtles and other hopes

By four years old I’d already realized that the words on the pages of books were written by particular people. And I had resolved to be one of them. ‘Resolved’ may be too strong a word. Hoped is better. I hopedhope to write. I’ve said it to a chosen few but I put it in print only once before, in an essay I wrote in college. It was read by two professors. One didn’t actually say the words “when turtles fly” but they came through. The other one talked for seven minutes about why I was born to be an editor. That was in 2002.

So there it is. It’s been this dream floating out in front of me for nearly as long as I can remember. If I have an older dream it’s probably to own a Cabbage Patch doll. I haven’t realized that one yet, either.

I’ll never forget the first time you had me over to your house in Minneapolis. We hadn’t known each other very long and we sat down at your table eating Franklin Street Bakery pizza and chocolate ganache cupcakes (we were such health nuts, weren’t we?!). I asked you what you wanted to do one day and with a hopeful smile you said, “I want to write!” I believed you that second!

I think you in turn asked me the same question, to which my reply was, “I want to finish this chocolate ganache cupcake!”

If I’m not mistaken, what you’re doing here is writing, isn’t it? And you do it very well too!

Well, you have to start somewhere. (I hope you didn’t feel my comment was belittling you, I did realise you meant books. I thought afterwards that maybe it wasn’t the most sensitive comment…) Anyway, I do enjoy reading your blog, whether or not it was the sort of writing you had had in mind 🙂
