preschool reading: The Tale of Peter Rabbit

Beatrix Potter. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902).

Reading Strategy: Predicting

Coordinating Weekly Activities:

  • had the stuffed bunnies out
  • visited the vegetable market on Wednesday and bought vegetables and blackberries from story, talked about gardens
  • took our Summer nature walk and collected items to study and sort at home
  • wrote in seasons journal and glued in pictures of our nature finds

Day One:
Asked: “What do you think this book is going to be about?”
Read aloud The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Part I only–to where Peter is trapped in the garden)
Asked: “What do you think is going to happen next in this story?” and recorded the answer.

Day Two:
Read and discussed the prediction about the story: “Let’s see what happens next.”
Read aloud The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Part II)
Asked: “What really happened to Peter?” and reviewed our prediction. “Were we right?”

Day Three:
Glued cotton balls together and added felt ears to make Mrs. Rabbit, Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail, and Peter. We painted our bunnies brown to match the story illustrations.

Day Four:
Re-read The Tale of Peter Rabbit together.
Showed our predictions to Daddy and retold the story to him.

Day Five:
Used our cotton bunnies and some lettuce and a watering can, etc. to act out the story on the table top.
Ate blackberries!
