Janet Soskice. Sisters of Sinai: How Two Lady Adventurers Found the Hidden Gospels (2009)
This was a biography of twin sisters from Scotland who, left a fortune by their father, used part of it to travel to some far-flung parts of the globe in search of ancient manuscripts. Agnes Smith Lewis and Margaret Smith Gibson were the discoverers of one of the earliest written texts of the Gospels that have been discovered. The text they found is believed to date from very near the life of Jesus, possibly even within a hundred years. It was found by Mrs. Lewis in a cupboard of ancient documents at St. Catherine’s monastery in the Sinai desert.
This book was really a small part of the story of the biblical text itself, the storms it has weathered, and the debates in scholarship regarding the veracity of its claims. As such, I found it fascinating.
